Hauliers demand improvement to Scottish road
Date: 18 March 2008
Hauliers are getting involved in a campaign to get a stretch of Scottish road improved to reduce accidents.
Website RoadTransport.com reported that hauliers have teamed up with emergency services and local businesses to call on the government to upgrade the stretch of the A82 which runs from Tarbet to Inverness.
Hauliers explained that figures showed the road is dangerous. In fact, there were 22 fatalities and more than 450 injuries on the stretch of tarmac between January 2005 and the end of 2007.
As an immediate goal, the campaigners are hoping to convince Transport Scotland to upgrade four accident blackspots along the route.
Alasdair Ferguson, the managing director of haulage firm Ferguson Transport (Spean Bridge), explained to the site: "The road is narrow and tortuous and, in a number of areas, is in such a state that I have grave concerns for the safety of our drivers.
"Our vehicles experience more damage and wear and tear on this road than any other."
He added that foreign haulage drivers were often surprised about the narrowness of the road and were not used to driving in such conditions and this regularly led to accidents.
