Non-compliant LEZ hauliers advised to pay eco charge

Date: 18 March 2008

Haulage companies who ordered equipment to make their vehicles compliant with the new London low emission zone (LEZ) before the zone came into force, but who haven't received it yet, are being advised to pay the daily charge rather than receive a penalty.

The Road Haulage Association (RHA) hopes that Transport for London (TfL) will waive the charge for those companies who are still waiting for the equipment, through no fault of their own.

In fact, the group spoke with TfL last week, saying that many members were worried that they would be operating non-compliant freight vehicles when their 28-day warning letters expired.

TfL said that operators would need to pay if they were operating non-compliant trucks, but that claims by innocent operators waiting for equipment would be treated "sympathetically".

The advice from the RHA is to "pay the daily charge where applicable as opposed to facing penalty charges during the interim period".
