Freight companies 'willing to invest in LHV' trials

Date: 17 March 2008

Some of the country's largest logistics companies are prepared to invest in trials for longer, heavier vehicles (LHVs) in the UK, according to the Freight Transport Association (FTA).

In a letter to the transport secretary, Ruth Kelly, FTA chief executive Theo De Pencier said that major firms would be able to contribute, RoadTransport.com reports.

He also commented on the upcoming study regarding the feasibility of these longer freight trucks in the UK from the Transport Research Laboratory and Heriot-Watt University, the publication of which has been delayed.

De Pencier said: "I hope that in publishing the report you will provide for a fuller evaluation of the costs and benefits of these vehicles, as other EU governments have felt confident to do."

In the Flanders region of Belgium, authorities have followed the Dutch in okaying a six-month LHV trial between Zeebrugge, Gent and Maasmechelen.
