FTA welcomes distribution of safety lenses

Date: 14 March 2008

The Freight Transport Association (FTA) has welcomed plans by Transport for London to issue 10,000 safety lenses to the capital's hauliers.

Distribution of the mirrors will be part of a £49.6 million effort to improve road safety over the next 12 months by the government department.

A campaign will also be launched aimed at cutting the number of collisions between cyclists and hauliers.

FTA's Gordon Telling, said: "FTA's view is that a single fatality or serious injury is one too many.

"Using similar lenses has been highly effective in reducing vehicle collisions on the motorway and we are confident that today's initiative will reduce injuries and fatalities for cyclists.

"We are delighted to be supporting the scheme today, and will continue to work closely with partners to eradicate fatal collisions in the future."

The lenses, which stick on to the passenger window of a truck's cab, allow drivers to see cyclists who are riding dangerously close to the side of the vehicle.
