Plans for lorry park unveiled

Date: 13 March 2008

Truck drivers look set to benefit from plans to build a 3,000 capacity lorry park in Kent which will allow them to take a break when heading to France.

Rest facilities also look set to be built on the site which will be able to accommodate up to 500 hauliers.

Located between Church Lane and Station Road, between junctions ten and 11 on the M20, the park is likely to be welcomed by haulage companies whose drivers spend long hours on the road.

It is hoped that its introduction will also reduce congestion in the area which builds up as trucks approach the Channel crossing.

Councillor Paul Carter, leader of Kent County Council, said: "We've come up with the solution that would have held virtually every lorry that has been held up in the last 11 to 12 days in a compound very close to the M20 motorway."

Problems on the route to Dover have been highlighted in the last fortnight when a strike by French ferry company SeaFrance saw a huge number of trucks stacked up on the road.
