Climate change 'could affect couriers'
Date: 13 March 2008
Climate change looks set to have more of an impact on couriers than first thought, with adverse weather likely to affect Britain's roads.
In a report released this week, the US National Research Council said that climate change, which causes sea levels to rise is likely to cause extra flooding on roads across the globe.
There is also the added danger that adverse weather conditions will see cracks appearing on many of the UK's major routes which could cause accidents and congestion.
"The time has come for transportation professionals to acknowledge and confront the challenges posed by climate change and to incorporate the most current scientific knowledge into the planning of transportation systems," said Henry Schwartz Jr, chair of the committee that wrote the report.
This week, owner drivers, including those with a courier job, are being advised to take extra care as strong winds bring chaos to UK roads.
The north-west of England has been particularly badly affected, with lorries overturning and cars being damaged by falling trees and lampposts.
