RHA welcomes Budget decision
Date: 13 March 2008
The Road Haulage Association has said it welcomes the decision by the chancellor Alistair Darling to postpone a 2p rise in fuel duty for six months.
Chief executive Roger King said that it was encouraging that the government had listened to the association's demands, although he warned that it was still just a "short-term fix".
"Ours is an industry that is now in desperate need of a long term solution, not just a deferment of a fuel duty increase in October 2008 and another proposed 1.84 pence per litre in April 2009," Mr King explained.
"The price of fuel continues to rise on what seems to be a daily basis and the costs for the UK haulage industry rise in line with each increase."
He added that there was still plenty of questions left unanswered by Mr Darling including how haulage companies are expected to remain competitive within Europe when diesel on the continent is at least 26p cheaper.
"Our campaign to stop further fuel duty increases will continue," Mr King concluded.
