Lib Dem mayoral candidate 'would scrap London low emission zone'
Date: 12 March 2008
Liberal Democrat London mayoral candidate Brian Paddick has said that he will get rid of the capital's low emission zone (LEZ) if he is elected.
Mr Paddick is standing against the current mayor, Ken Livingstone, and Tory candidate Boris Johnson, and has said he will scrap the emission zone, which forces haulage operators to run 'green' trucks or pay huge sums to enter central London, RoadTransport.com reports.
The zone came into effect this year and is causing problems for freight operators who are having to spend large amounts of money to make sure their vehicles meet environmental standards, in terms of exhaust emissions.
Paddick believes that it is threatening small and medium-sized haulage businesses.
As well as this, he is looking to make commercial vehicles such as freight trucks exempt from the London congestion charge, but impose a £10 24/7 congestion charge for other vehicles.
Meanwhile, Boris Johnson has said he will cancel the £25 per day congestion charge proposed by Ken Livingstone, which will affect the worst-polluting vehicles in the capital.
