Operation Stack lifted, allowing haulage drivers access to Europe
Date: 11 March 2008
Haulage drivers using the M20 have welcomed the news that Operation Stack is to be lifted.
This operation had involved haulage vehicles queuing to cross the Channel. An ongoing strike by SeaFrance ferry workers had meant that coast-bound lanes in Kent had been closed over the last week.
However, the section of the motorway between junctions eight and nine was reopened over the weekend to haulage drivers and other road users after the backlog of logistics vehicles heading to France was cleared.
During the implication of Operation Stack, the Freight Transport Association (FTA) suggested that the industrial action was costing the transport industry around £500,000 per day.
The organisation added that the situation had highlighted the need for better facilities for haulage drivers heading to Europe.
FTA director of external affairs, Geoff Dossetter, commented: "The long-term remedy to this situation must be for an adequate lorry park in Kent. FTA looks forward to an early announcement by Kent County Council that such a facility will soon be available."
