Study reveals high haulage costs in the UK compared to Europe
Date: 11 March 2008
New research has highlighted just how expensive it is for haulage drivers to run their trucks in the UK.
Website roadtransport.com reported that a new study carried out by Nera Economic Consulting and the Freight Transport Association (FTA) showed that UK haulage drivers face some of the highest operating costs in Europe.
The study took into account factors like staffing, fuel, vehicle excise duty (VED) and insurance costs.
After analysing these costs, the researchers gave the UK's haulage costs a baseline score of 100. Across Europe, only the Netherlands came out with higher costs, while both Italy and Germany had similar scores.
However, the report highlighted that haulage companies in some nations, such as Poland and Hungary, enjoyed significantly lower operating costs.
The website added that the FTA said that it planned to use the information to show the government that the high price of fuel in the UK is harming the profitability of haulage companies in the country.
