RHA sends chancellor 'last-ditch' fuel duty plea

Date: 11 March 2008

Haulage groups are worried that road haulage companies will suffer if the price of fuel goes up further, and are calling on the government not to hike taxes.

Tomorrow (Wednesday, March 12th), the chancellor, Alistair Darling, will announce this year's Budget, and he may opt to increase fuel duty, piling more pressure on hauliers.

Now the Road Haulage Association (RHA) has sent a last-ditch plea to Mr Darling not to go ahead with the rise.

"On the eve of his Budget, we urge the Chancellor not to add to the acute financial burden of haulage operators by putting an extra two pence per litre on fuel duty," said RHA chief executive Roger King.

"It makes no sense to increase the UK's transport costs at a time when these are playing an increasingly significant role in putting UK businesses at risk."

The RHA also welcomes the proposal by the Scottish National party to introduce a fuel duty regulator that could help offset global fuel price increases with a reduction in tax.
