Fault found with Dorset speed camera convictions

Date: 05 March 2008

Convictions issued by a speed camera in Dorset have been declared void after an error was discovered.

Located on the A35 at Chideock, the camera has issued fines to some 25,000 drivers - many of whom are likely to have been couriers or owner drivers.

But now the Dorset Safety Camera Partnership has been forced to admit that paperwork for the speed limit was invalid because the 30mph zone was said to run from Seatown Road - a road that does not actually exist.

The discovery was made when freight lorry driver Alan Dawe appealed against a claim that he was driving at 41mph in the slow zone.

Now more than £1.5 million may have to be repaid to motorists who were caught by the camera.

Speed cameras are a contentious topic with many motorists, including courier drivers, as many believe they are often placed where there is no real need for them, and that they are used to generate income for the government.
