Couriers may benefit from Boris' traffic changes
Date: 04 March 2008
Courier drivers are likely to benefit if Boris Johnson is elected Mayor of London this spring.
The straw-haired Conservative mayoral candidate has promised to cancel Ken Livingstone's proposed £25 per day congestion charge for gas-guzzling vehicles, and to make traffic lights stay green for longer for cars and courier vans.
His plans for the London congestion charge include ending high fines for non-payment, and introducing a lower fee for entering the city centre during non-peak times, the Times reports.
This could help courier drivers delivering loads at hours other than during the morning and evening rush hours.
In terms of traffic lights, Mr Johnson claims that Mr Livingstone has introduced 1,000 more sets of traffic lights across the capital since 2001, a move that hinders couriers and owner drivers.
He added: "We will rephrase traffic lights so that they operate to keep traffic moving slowly. We can do this without in any way imperilling pedestrians."
