Couriers in Scotland may face speed cameras on Forth Road Bridge

Date: 03 March 2008

Courier drivers working in Scotland may have to contend with speed cameras on the Forth Road Bridge before long.

According to the Edinburgh Evening News, average-speed cameras would be installed on the bridge while road works are taking place. These cameras measure the speed of vehicles, such as courier vans, over set distances.

When road works begin next year, the cameras would make sure that a 30mph limit is enforced.

Work is due to begin on the bridge, which links Edinburgh with Fife, to replace carriageway expansion joints, and vehicles will need to use ramps above the two joints.

Winds are heavier here, so a slower speed limit is needed.

Tony Martin of the Forth Estuary Transport Authority said: "The cameras will be temporary, but it is a good way of trailling the system to see if it works.

"People are very suspicious of cameras, but on a structure like this, safety is so important that drivers have to keep their speeds down."
