Haulage workers praised for swift first aid action

Date: 29 February 2008

Two haulage company workers probably saved the life of a co-worker following a loading accident.

A 27-year-old worker fell from a freight lorry trailer at the headquarters of Alan Davie Transport near Forfar last week, the Forfar Dispatch reports.

He had been working on the top of a double-decker trailer when he slipped and fell to the ground.

The firm's boss, Alan Davie, said that his son Ewan and haulage driver John Gaffney had reacted really quickly to the accident.

"The first thing they did was pull the lad's tongue out to stop him from choking on it," he said.

"We called 999 for an ambulance and the women we spoke to stayed on the phone and gave us instructions as to what to do until the paramedics got there.

"We kept him breathing and gathered some quilts to keep him warm until the ambulance arrived."

It is hoped that the first aid work that the haulage workers performed will help the worker recover fully.
