TfL urged not to charge innocent freight operators for emission zone
Date: 29 February 2008
The Road Haulage Association (RHA) is asking the government not to charge freight operators who, through no fault of their own, have not been able to get the right equipment for the London low emission zone (LEZ) in time.
The LEZ zone is an area of central London where freight drivers are charged to enter, if their haulage trucks are not 'green' enough in terms of carbon dioxide emissions. The idea is that it will clean up the air in the capital, but it also means that haulage companies have to spend money on upgrading their vehicles.
Many RHA members ordered abatement equipment long before the zone came into force this year, but have not yet received it.
Now the freight group is asking Transport for London (TfL) not to charge these operators who are using non-compliant trucks, but had still acted in time.
A TfL spokeswoman said: "If people can provide evidence they tried to get the equipment fitted on time, we will look at their case specifically."
