Survey: One in six logistics drivers attacked

Date: 27 February 2008

A new survey indicates that one in six logistics drivers across Europe and Central Asia was attacked between 2000 and 2005.

The shocking report, compiled by the International Road Transport Union (IRU) and other groups, highlights the need for European governments to take steps to reduce crime directed at freight drivers.

Including 1,300 face-to-face interviews and 700 online questionnaires, the study looked at drivers and haulage companies from 35 different countries between 2000 and 2005.

It found that 17 per cent of all the drivers interviewed had suffered an attack during that time, and that 30 per cent had been attacked on more than one occasion.

As well as this, 21 per cent of logistics drivers were physically assaulted, and 40 per cent of the attacks targeted the driver's personal belongings. The remaining 60 per cent targeted the vehicle and its load.

Many of these attacks (42 per cent) took place in haulage truck parks, and 66 per cent occurred at night time or early in the morning.

The IRU said in a statement: "The study recommends that national authorities establish and maintain safe and secure truck stops and parking areas, as well as national police road freight crime units in each country."
