Diesel thefts target freight vehicles in Northumberland
Date: 26 February 2008
A spate of thefts has seen hundreds of pounds worth of diesel go missing from freight vehicles in Wooler, Northumberland.
Police say the incidents, at three separate locations, took place late on Wednesday night or early on Thursday morning, the Northumberland Gazette reports.
Some £610 of diesel was taken from vehicles in Berwick Road Industrial Estate, £30 was stolen from a bus at Glen Valley Tours, and £200 was stolen from a vehicle in Oliver Road.
Such attacks place particular pressure on logistics firms at a time when fuel prices are at a record high.
Richard Aynsley, who owns the vehicles that were at the industrial estate, said: "I cannot afford to take that out of a week's earnings.
"There's ten of us in here and this sort of thing jeopardises our livelihoods. People are targeting this area and we have to pay the price for it."
Inspector Sue Peart speculated that the attacks could be because the price of diesel is so high.
