Freight vehicle production increases in January
Date: 25 February 2008
Production of freight vehicles in the UK increased by 6.3 per cent in January, according to figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).
Some 20,836 vehicles were produced over the month, and 8,541 were for the home market - an increase of 4.5 per cent.
"UK bus, truck, and van production hit its best January since 1990, following a strong performance through 2007," said SMMT chief executive Paul Everitt.
"The rolling-year total was the highest since 1998 and is forecast to continue throughout 2008."
He added: "Environmental issues remain a priority and Leyland Trucks factory's recent 'Zero waste to Landfill' achievement is an example of sustainable production in action."
The group added that technological innovation has helped manufacturers of freight vehicles to cut CO2 and air quality emissions from vehicles.
Today, the manufacture of vehicles takes half the energy it did five years ago.
