MEPs back plans for truck stop in north Wales

Date: 22 February 2008

Influential members of the European parliament (MEPs) have agreed with haulage professionals that a new secure truck stop is needed in north Wales.

According to RoadTransport.com, influential MEP Corien Wortmann-Kool has offered her support to a scheme to build a new facility for haulage drivers near the A55 in north Wales.

The MEP sits on the European parliament's Transport and Tourism Committee, which recently highlighted the need for more secure facilities for haulage vehicles across Europe.

Ms Wortmann-Kool expressed her support for the north Wales site in a letter written to Dai Owen, director of JD Owen Transport and a campaigner for the proposed Euroroute Secure Truck Park and Enterprise Park planned for Flintshire.

He told RoadTransport.com: "We submitted the plans in July and we're still waiting for a decision, but hopefully such high-profile support will help our cause."

In 2007, the Road Haulage Association (RHA) backed the proposed truck stop.

The haulage group was commenting after a number of hijackings in the region. Chrys Rampley, the RHA's manger of infrastructure, commented at the time: "There need to be more safe and secure stopping facilities for drivers on the A55 to prevent these incidents happening.

"Drivers need a proper place to stop so they can get the rest they need in order to drive safely on our roads."
