Haulage managers 'work longer hours'
Date: 21 February 2008
Haulage managers generally work longer hours than their counterparts in most other industries, according to a report by the Chartered Management Institute (CMI).
The group found that 94 per cent of managers in the transport and logistics sector work longer hours than they are contracted to in order to meet deadlines, RoadTransport.com reports.
In most other sectors, fewer than 90 per cent of managers work extra hours.
Petra Wilson, CMI's head of public affairs, said: "In the longer term there is clear evidence that working long hours has a detrimental effect in performance and productivity."
She added that haulage managers may find that they get ill if they work too hard.
"[Longer hours] can also lead to poor health," she said.
Road haulage managers are facing a particularly tough time at the moment, with record high fuel prices and increasing competition from abroad.
Ms Wilson pointed out that managers, including haulage managers, were more likely to make mistakes if they worked long hours and became overly tired.
