Humber Bridge toll increases for haulage trucks
Date: 20 February 2008
The toll for haulage trucks crossing the Humber Bridge has been increased by £1.60.
The increase has led one haulage company in Scunthorpe to consider sending its freight drivers the long way round in order to avoid the large fees, the Scunthorpe Telegraph reports.
At the moment, the haulage firm's drivers pay £18.30 each way to cross the bridge, and this would rise to almost £20 under the new plans.
Neil Johnson, co-owner of the haulage firm G&C Johnson, said: "I don't think the bridge will ever be toll-free, but why does it have to be so high?
"It's not that we want it to be wiped out altogether but if it was £1 for cars and £5 for lorries I think people would pay that."
He said that it would only take an extra 15 minutes to avoid using the bridge for freight drivers going to Hull.
The high cost of fuel is also adding pressure on haulage companies in the UK.
