Ireland to improve testing of courier vans and other CVs

Date: 19 February 2008

Ireland is set to improve its testing programme for commercial vehicles, Commercial Motor reports.

A review conducted by consultancy PricewaterhouseCoopers recommended that the system be overhauled, and Ireland's Road Safety Authority (RSA) will now take on responsibility for checking commercial vehicles such as courier vans.

The changes have come into effect partly because of the many defects found in Irish vehicles travelling through the UK.

"The review was conducted on the request of my predecessor, following government and public disquiet relating to a number of high-profile road collisions involving commercial vehicles and the high number of Irish-registered vehicles detected with serious defects by the UK authorities in the course of EU-required inspections," said Ireland's minister for transport, Noel Dempsey.

The RSA has begun increasing the number of roadside checks it conducts, meaning that couriers and owner drivers should ensure their vehicles meet all requirements.

Other changes include liking the annual vehicle test with operators' own fleet and maintenance records.
