'Yellow vulture' cameras poised to catch out couriers

Date: 18 February 2008

A new kind of menace has arrived on the M27 designed to catch out unsuspecting courier drivers - 'yellow vulture' speed cameras.

So called because they wait at the side of the road silently waiting to prey on speeding couriers, owner drivers and other motorists, the cameras sit on top of yellow poles, This Is Hampshire reports.

They have been set up to catch out those motorists who go above 50mph on a stretch of the M27 where roadworks are due to begin next weekend.

According to the Highways Agency, they are needed to protect the safety of workers. A spokeswoman said: "We use safety cameras, including average speed cameras, to enforce speed limits at roadworks where road speeds are lowered and drivers are likely to speed.

"Essentially the cameras are used to protect the workforce, motorists and keep traffic moving through the roadworks."

However, critics have argued that they could even make the road less safe, by forcing drivers to slow down suddenly, and focus on their speedometer rather than the road. They could also hinder courier drivers delivering loads.
