Report: Excessive signage may be dangerous for courier drivers

Transport officials believe that barriers and signs on roads may actually make it more dangerous for couriers and other motorists.
A report by the County Surveyors' Society found that railings, kerbs, traffic lights and white lines could make people assume they are safe and fail to concentrate so much on driving carefully.
The report underlines a viewpoint held by many couriers and owner drivers, namely that excessive signage and speed limitations can often hinder them unnecessarily when they are delivering loads.
Providing less information on the roads will actually encourage drivers to slow down to negotiate a safer course around junctions.
The report states: "The human response to increased in-car and on-road safety may be to increase risky behaviour.
"We are social animals and there is some evidence that the removal of control and the creation of uncertainty can help slow traffic and elicit more considerate behaviour."
