Freight trucks could be banned from Stockton rat run

Date: 13 February 2008

Heavy freight trucks could soon be barred from entering communities near Stockton.

After the completion of a major interchange on the A66 at Long Newton, local communities on the A67 are expected to apply for weight restrictions, the Northern Echo reports.

Stockton Borough Council has said it is thinking of introducing such restrictions at Eaglescliffe, Yarm and Kirklevington, meaning that haulage trucks would be barred.

"Our aim is to ensure heavy commercial vehicles use the main trunk road network, to avoid residential areas as much as possible, therefore the weight restrictions will apply to some sections of the A67," said councillor Bob Cook.

The changes will affect freight lorries entering Eaglescliffe from Durham Tees Valley Airport. Logistics truck movements are expected to increase with the planned cargo terminal at the airport.
