John Lewis announces green van plan

Date: 07 February 2008

John Lewis has revealed plans to manufacture a new range of vans which will be better for the environment.

Those delivering goods in the vans will be less concerned about their carbon footprint as the new vehicles aim to reduce CO2 emissions by 30 per cent.

The plans highlight the growing importance of green issues to companies, including courier firms.

Although manufacture of the vans has not yet begun, John Lewis has revealed it has been in talks with several firms about the project.

It says that the first designs should emerge in mid-2008 but that testing on the vehicles will not begin until around two years later.

"Our business is all about sustainability and we are determined to play our part in tackling climate change," said Charlie Mayfield, chairman of the John Lewis Partnership.

"I am delighted to announce this programme and am convinced that together we can make enormous progress."

John Lewis' partner Waitrose is also said to be doing its bit for the environment with recent reports claiming the Rickmansworth branch is being run on green energy from tomatoes.
