LEZ could be costly for home movers
Date: 06 February 2008
Moving house in London could become more expensive, as UK road haulage services face the low emission zone introduced by Transport for London.
It has been estimated by the British Association of Removers (BAR) that the system will add up to £750 to the cost of moving house, as haulage companies that are not compliant with the low emission standards will have to pay £200 every time they enter the zone.
Association president of BAR Jonathan Hood told the Evening Standard: "Many of our members have invested heavily in new trucks over recent years."
He added that the impact on owner operators in the removals business could be huge, estimating that up to a third could go out of business.
The Daily Mail reported that hundreds of drivers had phoned helplines after facing uncertainty after seeing the LEZ signs in London. This is despite the fact that cars are not subject to the new rules.
