LEZ begins in London

Date: 04 February 2008

The first low emission zone in the UK has come into force in London, meaning that the drivers of the most polluting haulage vehicles will have to pay to enter the capital.

From this morning (February 4th) the operators of freight vehicles which produce extensive amounts of pollution will have to pay a daily charge of £200 to enter London.

Freight haulage firms who fail to pay the charge on their most polluting logistics vehicles face fines of up to £1,000.

Initially, the scheme will only cover logistics vehicles which exceed 12 tonnes in weight. However, it will soon be extended to cover buses and coaches.

David Brown, managing director for surface transport at Transport for London (TfL) commented: "We have done a huge amount of work to inform operators that they will need to meet the low emission zone standards.

"Many operators have already taken action and a significant number of lorries driving in London already meet the emissions standards."

Recently, the Freight Transport Association said that it believed as many as 10,000 freight vehicles in and around London might not be ready for the new standards.
