FTA: Effective freight links needed in Wales
Date: 04 February 2008
Effective transport links need to be established in Wales in order to allow haulage companies to operate effectively.
The Freight Transport Association (FTA) wants the links between north and south Wales, which it believes are currently poor quality, to be improved for freight drivers.
Recommendations to improve roads commonly used by freight companies including the A470 and A483 were made by the group in response to a Welsh Assembly consultation document.
FTA head of policy for the Midlands, Wales and south-west, Stephen Kelly, told Motor Transport: "It is clear that we need to ensure that effective transport links are developed. What is therefore needed in Wales is a strategic freight network that will deliver a modern, efficient freight transport system."
This would mean that Welsh road haulage firms would not have to use English motorways such as the M5 and M6 so much.
In other news, a haulage driver was recently caught smoking in the cab of his freight lorry in Wales, and had to pay £185 in fines and costs.
The smoking ban that came into effect in England and Wales last July extends to freight trucks.
