Freight firms urged to keep up with paperwork to mitigate ID theft

Date: 01 February 2008

Freight companies have been warned to keep on top of paperwork so that they don't suffer the same problems as Flint-based owner operator Puritan Stone.

The company contacted Commercial Motor to say it had been the victim of identity theft, having received confusing phone calls from companies in Europe about loads it is supposed to have delivered.

Bailiffs for VAT payment in Europe have also visited the company's offices and it has received a court summons to appear in court in Greece over a driver's unpaid wages. It is thought the ID theft happened after the sale of a Volvo haulage truck last year.

The Freight Transport Association has advised the firm to get as much information as possible from the bailiff and from the customers, if possible, although the group added that there is not much advice available about cross-border ID theft.

Spokeswoman Sally Thornley also warned that other owner operators should make sure their paperwork is up to date so that they can prove where all their logistics trucks are at any given time.
