Van drivers neglecting to 'belt up'

Date: 31 January 2008

A large number of van drivers, possibly including courier drivers, are neglecting to wear their seat belts.

Police conducted a two-hour spot check in Banbury, Oxfordshire and found 38 drivers who were not wearing their safety belts, the Banbury Guardian reports.

It is disappointing that in just two hours on one stretch of road, 38 people were travelling without their seatbelt.

"This became an offence in 1983 and people know it is illegal not to wear one," said Thames Valley Police's PC Mark Pilling.

"People seem to forget seatbelts can save lives, even on the shortest trips or at low speed. The majority of those stopped were van drivers and it seems the message is not getting through to some people."

Van drivers such as couriers and other owner drivers should ensure that they always 'belt up' while driving.

Separately, the new Corporate Manslaughter Act in the UK will mean that courier companies have a duty of care to make sure their courier driver employees are safe on the roads.
