Scottish ministers to fight on behalf of Scottish haulage firms

Date: 31 January 2008

Scottish ministers will continue to fight the corner of haulage drivers in Scotland and the rest of the UK.

Alex Salmond, Scotland's First Minister, was among those at a reception held by the Road Haulage Association (RHA) in Edinburgh on January 29th, where topics included fuel taxation, and the profitability of local freight firms.

"I was very impressed with the understanding of our industry's case among MSPs and it was gratifying to receive total support for everything we are doing to bring the plight of the industry to the attention of the UK government," said RHA chief executive Roger King.

"MSPs promised to keep the pressure on in the Scottish Parliament, especially in view of the very high cost of fuel in the outermost reaches of Scotland."

Fuel has reached historically high prices, and is placing intense pressure on road haulage companies the length and breadth of the UK.

It was agreed at the RHA meeting that foreign haulage drivers had an unfair competitive advantage because they are able fill their logistics vehicles with cheaper European diesel.
