Fewer haulage firms go bust in Q4 2007

Date: 30 January 2008

Fewer haulage companies went bust in the final three months of last year than in the same period in 2006.

According to Equifax figures seen by RoadTransport.com, there were 5.2 per cent fewer business failures in the fourth quarter of 2007 among transport and communications companies than in Q4 2006.

This contrasted with a 16 .6 per cent increase in failures in the construction industry.

Neil Munroe of Equifax suggested that road haulage companies may have performed relatively well because the industry has been suffering for several years anyway.

Also, "it could be that the supply and demand balance has changed a little", he added.

He warned that road haulage companies should continue to monitor changes to the financial status of their customers and suppliers in order not to fall prey to bad debt.

Separately, the London low emission zone is due to come into effect on Monday, February 4th, which will place an extra financial burden on road haulage companies operating in the capital.
