Requirements for becoming a courier van driver
Date: 30 January 2008
Website RoadTransport.com has provided a useful breakdown of the criteria people have to meet if they want to be a van driver, such as a courier.
In terms of licences, people who passed a standard Category B test before January 1st 1997 can also drive small vehicle weighing up to 7.5 tonnes - which includes many courier vans.
Those who passed their Category B test after January 1st 1997 will have to take a Category C1 test separately to be able to drive a courier van. Those wishing to drive vehicles weighing more than 7.5 tonnes will need a Category C+E licence.
Budding courier drivers will also need a clean licence, together with good numeracy, literacy and (usually) people skills. Although funding is not available for getting a licence, literacy and numeracy skills funding is often subsidised by the government, or free.
Courier drivers must also be fit to drive, and should tell the DVLA if they have a medical condition that may affect them at work.
Salaries for van drivers can range between £11,000 and £22,000 a year.
