Volvo gears up to show off anti drink driving device for freight haulage professionals
Date: 28 January 2008
Freight haulage professionals and other logistics drivers could be physically prevented from operating their vehicles if they have drunk any alcohol at all.
Website Roadtransport.com has reported that freight haulage vehicle manufacturer Volvo Trucks currently expects to be able to show off a working Alcolock system on its stand at this year's CV Show - due to take place in April.
The unit will be able to prevent a logistics or freight haulage driver from starting his vehicle when under the influence of alcohol.
For companies with a zero-tolerance to alcohol policy, the units can be set up to cut out if 20 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood is detected. This is despite the fact that the legal limit in the UK is 80 milligrams per 100 millilitres.
What's more, the report suggests that the units can be retrofitted to existing freight haulage vehicles, meaning that companies can upgrade their fleet without having to invest in new logistics trucks.
According to Alcolock, the system has another benefit. The company explained that it lets freight haulage companies implement their alcohol policy fairly and avoid "accusations of victimisation or discrimination".
