Couriers can take measures to cut fuel costs

Date: 23 January 2008

As the government threatens to hike fuel duty yet again in April, there are various measures that couriers and other owner drivers can take to cut fuel bills.

A spokesman for motorist organisation the AA said: "If motorists adapt the way they use their vehicles with more efficient-driving techniques they can reduce CO2 emissions and save as much as three litres of fuel in every 50."

Courier drivers delivering loads, including backloads and hotshot loads, should keep to the speed limit when driving on motorways, the group suggests.

Also, couriers and owner drivers should leave plenty of room between their van and the car in front, in order to allow smoother driving, and should avoid heavy breaking when approaching junctions and roundabouts.

Finally, smooth acceleration and keeping tyres properly inflated will allow courier drivers with loads such as backloads to keep fuel costs down.

The government is planning to increase fuel duty by 2p per litre, but the Road Haulage Association and the British Chambers of Commerce are opposed to this measure, which would dramatically impact couriers and owner drivers.
