Operators look to buy LEZ-compliant freight haulage trucks
Date: 22 January 2008
Many operators are looking to purchase trucks that are compliant with the upcoming London low emission zone (LEZ).
The zone will be phased in this year, with the aim being to cut emissions from road haulage trucks carrying loads and to reduce air pollution.
"It's becoming a bit of a struggle to sell anything that isn't LEZ compliant," Nigel Sharp of freight haulage truck dealership F&G Commercials told Commercial Motor.
"Even operators who don't regularly go to London are after LEZ-compatible trucks, just in case they get asked to take a load there."
Nevertheless, even though the scheme will be introduced for the heaviest freight haulage trucks carrying loads next month, some owner operators still seem to be ignorant of the legislation.
"As a consequence I think there'll be a big rush for LEZ trucks in a few weeks time when reality dawns," said Lee Smith of dealership Hanbury Riverside. "It hasn't happened yet."
Road transport, including logistics haulage vehicles carrying loads, is the single biggest source of harmful particulate matter and nitrogen oxide in London.
"The [London] Mayor believes a low emission zone is the most effective way to achieve reductions of the most harmful road transport generated emissions in London," the Transport for London website states.
