Freight haulage drivers given more time to prepare for London's LEZ

Date: 21 January 2008

Freight haulage companies and other logistics operators have been given more time to prepare for the London Low Emission Zone (LEZ).

The capital's Transport for London (TfL) said that it would be offering some leeway to freight haulage professionals when the London LEZ is introduced in February.

The move came after statistics emerged which showed that many freight haulage professionals and logistics companies might not be able to meet the emissions targets needed to enter the capital.

A statement explained: "Given this situation, TfL is giving operators who drive in the zone with vehicles that do not comply, a 28 day warning period in which to bring their vehicles into compliance.

"During this time they will not be fined, but after 28 days penalty charge notices will be issued and it will be up to the operator to show that they have made all reasonable progress before the introduction of the zone."

Nick Fairholme, head of the London LEZ, added that he was encouraged by the progress that many freight haulage companies had already made and explained that the grace period struck a "fair balance" between enforcing the rules and giving people time to improve the environmental efficiency of their logistics vehicles.

He added: "We always planned to issue only warning letters to operators of non-compliant vehicles the first time they are seen within the zone."
