Freight haulage drivers paid £8 per hour
Date: 21 January 2008
The average hourly rate of pay for a light goods vehicle (LGV) driver licence category C+E is £8.09 per hour, and gross weekly earnings come to £477.91.
That's according to a new survey from Incomes Data Services and the Road Haulage Association (RHA), which also found that the average hourly rate for LGVs category C is £7.87 an hour (weekly gross earnings of £428.62).
The study also showed that many freight haulage drivers were having to supplement their pay with overtime and bonuses, with 21 per cent of Class C logistics drivers' pay made up of these extras.
The median pay increase level for drivers is 4.5 per cent, compared to 3.5 per cent for the whole economy.
"The above inflation pay settlements indicate pressure on the availability of suitability qualified drivers, despite the widespread use of Polish and other Eastern European drivers," said RHA's director of employment affairs, Ruth Pott.
"The cost of employing drivers in the haulage sector has risen even more steeply, due to increasing regulation, health and safety and training requirements."
The report also showed that only 1.6 per cent of freight haulage drivers are women.
