Freight haulage drivers 'allowed to unload for longer in London'

Date: 15 January 2008

Freight haulage drivers and other logistics professionals will have more time to unload their heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) in central London, after details of a new trial scheme were unveiled.

The City Westminster said that it would trial new rules which would giver freight haulage professionals and other owner operators 40 minutes to unload their vehicles.

As a result, haulage professionals will be able to stop their HGVs on single and double yellow lines between 11am and 6.30pm for longer.

A statement from the council explained: "The intention of the trial is to give businesses more flexibility when determining delivery times and routes and, as a consequence, reduce the amount of penalty charge notices (PCNs) issued to HGVs."

Under the six-month trial, which began on January 7th, logistics drivers with vehicles which weigh less than 3.5 tonnes will be permitted to stop to unload for a maximum of 20 minutes.

Officials at Westminster added: "We have worked closely with delivery firms and residents to identify issues associated with unloading [and] loading and to develop solutions.

"This has included customer focus groups, regular discussions at area forums and the commercial delivery group and accompanying vehicles on their delivery runs."
