Freight haulage drivers given truck alarms

Date: 08 January 2008

Freight haulage drivers in Cumbria have been given remote truck alarms by police in a bid to cut down on vehicle crime.

The scheme is being funded by the government through the Carlisle and Eden Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership, Commercial Motor reports.

So far 45 alarms have been handed out at truck stops and motorway service stations in the county.

Claire Stevens of the Cumbria Constabulary said that they had originally planned to give them to freight haulage drivers to use for one night.

"We soon decided that this wouldn't be practical so we've given them to drivers who regularly use the same stops," she said. "I don't see any reason why we shouldn't get funding for more if this is thought to be a success."

Meanwhile, plans for a new secure truck park for the A55 in North Wales have been welcomed by the Freight Transport Association (FTA).

It has been proposed by JD Owen Transport and will be located off junction 31.
