Manchester congestion charge scheme set to fail

Date: 07 January 2008

In great news for courier drivers in the north-west, the congestion charging scheme for Manchester looks set to fail.

Should the charge be introduced, courier drivers and owner drivers with loads driving into Greater Manchester would have to pay a daily charge, in the same way as in London.

However, three out of the ten relevant boroughs are against the plan, with many people believing that it would hamper the operations of couriers and others.

Should one more council vote against it, the plan would be shelved, the Manchester Evening News reports. Councillors in Wigan are being called on to join the revolt.

Peter Franzen, the leader of the opposition Community Action Party, will ask Wigan to "oppose congestion charging and road pricing for Greater Manchester".

He believes that the policy will not go through but will embarrass Labour.

In London, the western extension of the congestion charging zone means that courier drivers with backloads and other loads in Kensington and other western areas have to pay the daily charge to enter the capital.
