More money made available for freight haulage training schemes
Date: 04 January 2008
The government has launched a new campaign to make sure freight drivers, logistics workers and other haulage professionals are aware of funding that it available to them.
A report from sector skills council for distribution firms, Skills for Logistics, has suggested that far more logistics works and freight haulage professionals could benefit from training grants than are currently receiving them.
In response, the body has launched a Skills Pay campaign to make sure freight haulage workers are aware of the monies available.
Mick Jackson, operations director at Skills for Logistics, told website personneltoday.com: "The logistics industry is the fifth largest sector in the UK economy, turning over £75 billion a year and employing 2.3 million people, which is eight per cent of the total UK workforce."
In particular, the organisation is looking to encourage freight haulage workers to consider publicly-funded qualifications, such as NVQs and Skills for Life (literacy and numeracy).
In study, logistics works with these skills have demonstrated improved productivity. Haulage firms which offer these training schemes generally also find it easier to recruit and retain staff.
