Drivers and road haulage hit by fuel hikes
Date: 02 January 2008
The UK road haulage industry has been feeling the effects of ever-rising fuel duty for some time and now it seems the nation's motorists are being affected as well.
Research from Motorpoint has indicated that the increasing cost of fuel is not only hindering haulage companies, it is forcing regular drivers to leave their cars at home as well.
According to the study, more than a third of the nation's drivers will not continue to run a vehicle amid growing fuel costs.
"It is possible to keep fuel costs to a minimum by shopping around," said Paul Winfield from the car retailer. "On the day we checked, their prices for a litre of unleaded fuel varied from 99.9p to 113.9p - a staggering difference of 14p in what is supposed to be an ultra-competitive market."
UK road haulage companies and owner operators joined with other motorists earlier this month to protest outside refineries against the government's recent 2p per litre increase in fuel duty.
Tax accounts for nearly two-thirds of the cost of petrol and diesel, and this is due to rise by another 2p a litre in April.
