Europe launches secure truck park project
Date: 27 December 2007
In great news for road haulage companies and freight forwarders with return loads and backloads to deliver, the European Parliament is launching a project to create secure truck parks across the continent.
A study has revealed that more than 90,000 drivers for road haulage firms delivering loads such as backloads are affected each year by organised criminals targeting freight haulage trucks.
Now an initial 5 million round of funding will help private/public partnerships to develop secure truck parks, RoadTransport.com reports. So far five projects have been accepted, including locations in France and Germany.
The scheme is the initiative of two MEPs, Corien Wortmann-Kool of the Netherlands and Anne Jensen from Denmark.
Wortmann-Kool said: "Transport crime is not yet a priority, but we have a good chance of elevating it over the next few years."
Road haulage companies and freight forwarders with loads such as backloads to deliver in the UK have lamented the closure of secure truck stops. One location that has been earmarked for closure is the Nightowl truck stop on the M54.
