Continental offers winter tyre warning
Date: 21 December 2007
Tyre maker Continental has warned that freight haulage drivers should ensure they have adequate tyres for the winter weather.
Road haulage trucks operating in cold areas of the continent should make sure they do not rely on summer tyres, which "just aren't built to hold the road in the same way that winter tyres do", the company's Joerg Burfien said.
"It's a fact: as temperatures drop below 45 degrees, so does an all-season tyre's ability to grip the road. And that can lead to dangerous driving conditions."
The company has also pointed out that owner operators could face financial penalties if they fail to use adequate tyres, and could even be prevented from travelling in that country, which could spell disaster for freight haulage firms.
In winter, all truck tyres should have a tread depth of at least four millimetres.
