Police warn Yorkshire courier drivers to be on their guard
Date: 18 December 2007
Police are warning van drivers in Yorkshire, including courier drivers dropping off their loads, to be on their guard following a spate of thefts.
North Yorkshire police have seen a developing trend for thieves nicking off with work vans when drivers had left keys in their ignition.
These drivers had been making quick visits to an address or dropping off deliveries - much as courier drivers might make a quick delivery of their loads.
More than ten vans have been stolen in this way in Selby, and police think that the thieves are travelling in from neighbouring counties to carry out their crimes.
Inspector Richard Abbott gave this warning to courier drivers dropping off loads and others: "This is a new type of crime spree emerging in the Selby district. It is an easy crime to prevent, however I understand why it happens.
"Drivers need to know that their vehicle may be targeted and although they feel safe, should always take out their keys and lock the van securely before leaving it unattended."
