More details about Tory plans for logistics sector

Date: 18 December 2007

At the recent Road Haulage Association Lunch, Tory transport spokesperson Theresa Villiers outlined proposals which gained approval with freight haulage professionals and owner operators.

Now, in an interview with roadtransport.com, Ms Villiers has sought to clarify exactly what plans she has to make life better for the country's freight haulage companies.

In a move which will offer some hope to everyone involved in the logistics sector, the Tory MP did not rule out the possibility of cutting fuel taxes in the future.

She told the site: "While we can't make a commitment to cut fuel duty now, that's not to say it will never happen."

In addition, Ms Villiers explained: "We want to see tougher enforcement of un-roadworthy foreign trucks and we're committed to bringing in lorry road-user charging. We've committed to doing it and will bring more detail as time permits."

Finally, the politician said that the Conservatives could see the merit in the argument from freight haulage groups that the speed limit for HGVs should be increased on single-lane A roads.

She pointed out to the website: "There is a case for raising the national limit [for LGVs] to 50mph while giving local highways authorities the ability to set a lower limit, as they can now.

"A higher limit, while undoubtedly receiving a mixed response from public, will bring benefits for the industry and other road users."
