UK couriers face high fuel prices

Date: 10 December 2007

UK couriers, including those with return loads, backloads and hotshot loads, are facing increasingly high fuel prices.

Some of these owner drivers who are carrying out courier work (with return loads and hotshot loads) are having to pay up to £1.20 per litre for diesel at the pumps.

These crazy prices are hampering couriers and owner drivers in their courier work.

One company, Greenbank Crane Services, told Commercial Motor that it was being charged £1.20 per litre through its BP fuel card - and courier firms could be facing similar prices if they use the scheme.

David Greenbank, the company's owner, said: "When I contacted BP I was surprised to learn my fuel card is managed by Direct Fuels, rather than BP itself.

"I even paid a visit to Direct Fuels' offices to make my point because they were charging me £1 per litre last Christmas. Instead I have been talking to Total who say that they can give me a price of £1.05 anywhere across the country and I am tempted by that."

Historically high fuel prices continue to make life difficult for couriers and owner drivers, including those with hotshot loads, backloads and return loads.
